Residential Admissions Information

Welcome Residential Students!

North Broward Preparatory School (NBPS) is an independent, coed, non-sectarian, pre-K - 12, college preparatory day/boarding institution. NBPS's strong and traditional college preparatory academic course offerings are complemented by enrichment offerings in Theater Arts, Music, Visual and Graphic Arts, Computer Science, and other subjects.

NBPS is located in South Florida and provides a wonderful setting for students from around the world. With our beautiful 80 acre campus and the ocean close by, North Broward offers a large range of sporting and social activities while maintaining a safe place to live and study.

Academics
The high school currently offers 26 Advanced Placement (AP) courses and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program.  Both AP and IB courses give advanced standing at many universities around the world.

Advanced Placement Courses
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses that follow the curriculum set forth by the American College Board's AP Program. Qualified students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades may enroll in these classes with recommendations from previous teachers in specific subject areas. Final exams are held in May and are externally graded by the College Board. Success on exams may entitle the student to course credit, and/or placement out of required courses at American universities or colleges.

Special Programs
IMACS - Institution of Mathematics and Computer Science, SAT preparation classes for tenth grade students, private music and/or voice lessons, and scuba diving are just a few of the extracurricular programs offered. These programs are offered at additional cost to the tuition.

English Requirement for International Student Admission
International students who apply to be admitted at NBPS must complete one of the following tests: TOEFL, SLEP or SSAT.

TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language - The student must have a paper-based TOEFL score of 450, a computer-based score of 140 - 153, or an Internet-based score of 41 - 52.

SLEP: Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP) Test - The test can be administered and scored by an overseas partner and results can be sent with the application to the school.  11th and 12th grade applicants must receive scaled scores of 50 or greater.  9th and 10th grade applicants must receive scaled scored of 45 or greater.  Depending on a student's score, attendance at a 3 week ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) may be required.

SSAT: Secondary School Admission Test - This is the admission exam required for entry by students within the United States or other countries. The SSAT ranks verbal, reading and quantitative skills from (1-99%) and compares the scores to other students who have taken the SSAT in the past three years. The students must pass the SSAT Test with a nationally scaled score of 50 or above in all three areas.  Exceptions are made on the verbal sections for non-native speakers of English.

Living Accommodations

Our residential students live on either of our two campuses in converted family homes or purpose-built accommodations which help foster peer support and a strong sense of family.  Fellowship among students makes our campus a relaxed and supportive place to live and learn. Students share comfortable bedrooms, with one to three roommates, depending on the room size.  The Residential facilities also provide a family room, recreation room, meeting/study room, and a snack/light meal kitchen and breakfast nook for the residents to share.

Residential (Boarding) Program:

Each facility is warmly furnished and is equipped with a local area network hookup for individual computer access for every resident. Televisions as well as state-of-the-art entertainment systems and telephones in community rooms as well as a residential environment created with adolescents in mind - complete and attractive, comfortable, and a fun living experience for residential students.

Each facility is staffed by one or more full time Housemasters.  The housemasters serve as surrogate parents to ensure proper behavior, monitor study habits, and mediate conflict.  Together with our security staff and cleaning crew, the Housemasters work hard to make sure that our students live life safely, comfortable, and to the best of their potential.

Residential students also have the entire campus at their disposal. Residents can enjoy swimming pools, gym, weight and exercise rooms, track, library, computer labs, art studios, music and dance studios, tennis courts, basketball courts, and much, much more. It's like living in a country club with the very best educational resources available. Residential students live an enviable lifestyle.

Important Information:

All students must possess a passport, valid for the duration of the academic year and six months afterwards, when entering the United States. All international students are required to have a student visa to enter the United States and attend NBPS. Please make an appointment with the US Embassy or Consulate in the country you reside in and present your passport and I-20 and complete the visa application form. It will take 8-10 weeks to process the student visa, so please plan ahead. You will not be able to stay at NBPS or the United States on any other VISA except an F-1 student visa.
