In the Middle School, course work builds on the skills mastered in the earlier grades, while providing a bridge to the challenges of high school. Middle School students assume more responsibility for their work and have more choices in elective subjects. They also have their own clubs, teams and guidance counselor. Some students may place into high school level courses.
Readiness for high school also requires social and emotional development. For this reason, each student has a faculty advisor who functions as the “parent on campus” to help him or her with any issues that arise during these three years.
At the heart of the Middle School is a traditional, challenging curriculum rooted in fundamentals which are presented by caring professionals. Core subjects include:
- Math, which extends to Geometry Honors
- Language Arts
- Social Studies, which includes one year of World Cultures and two years of American History
- Earth, Life, and Physical Sciences with hands-on work
- Spanish or French
- Electives including Physical Education, Technology courses, and the Fine Arts
NBPS also develops students’ leadership potential. Students learn the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People in a comprehensive leadership program that is part of every class. They participate in formulating campus policy through Student Government, celebrate the combination of academics and service in the Lumen Domus Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society and conduct an extensive Community Service Program through clubs and advisory groups. Leadership skills are taught, promoted and recognized through these opportunities. |
